Paul has been after me since last Tuesday to find a club and join it. Whether this is because he wants to make sure I have other friends before quietly letting everything go or because he genuinely wishes me to be happy is something I am not sure about, but I’m not going to think about it for now. I know that last bit sounds very tin-foil-hat, but I promise I’m not anymore paranoid than I need to be lately. :-)

Ah, yes, anyway, about the clubs. I’ve been fishing around via e-mail, and began talking with the CX debate coach. Our team is only 2 years old, but we’ve been placing at nationals apparently. When I came OU we didn’t have a team, and I thought that was that. Wish I’d known about it sooner. The coach seemed enthusiastic about me joining and told me all the perks of the team– Boren wants us to be happy (he’s a former debator himself) so our trips are all-expenses paid, with a practically infallable letter of excuse for them.

Paul considered seeing Hotel Rwanda tonight, so I gave him a call. He was going to spend the evening napping before heading out, but I did get to tell him that I was going to join the debate team. He thought I would enjoy it and seemed glad. It helps me a lot to have somebody be happy for me about finding a club, and to push me to go. I’m unhappy when I’m not around friends very much, but I lack a lot of the skills (and more than a little iniative due to feelings of social inadequacy) to get myself out there and meet people. It helps to have somebody think I can do it.
