Insurance Salesman for the Umbrella Corp.
Friday, July 8th, 2005 @ 6:00am. Category: General. So Jay was called by some random businessman named Austin, having got Jay’s contact info via an “associate” (how he got it we still haven’t figured out). Citigroup, specifically Primerica, was expanding in the area and needed people. At the interview Austin let slip that it was actually more of a financial advisor sort of thing and invited Jay plus guests to a seminar tonight (Thursday) about Citigroup and what sort of people they were needing to expand. “Plus guests” means me apparently, so this evening we headed up to the Bank of America somewhere in north OKC.
Why Citigroup was holding a seminar in the Bank of America building is beyond me, but there we were. After roaming the building in search of restrooms we were seized upon by a severe, small woman with over-painted eyelids and told to sign in while she found which associate invited us. I wasn’t even here for anything involving a job (as I love my current one) but the lady suggested I sign in too. I signed in and left all personally-identifying information blank. Austin found us and led us back to the room the seminar would be held in.
Now, I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Citigroup and Primerica, but their logo is an umbrella. An umbrella. Hell-oo! Zombies! Eek. I’ve got a photo of the business card Austin gave to Jay, and as soon as I get back to my computer (avec Photoshop) I’ll post it. This little umbrella logo appeared in the top right of every slide of the Powerpoint presentation. One of the top officials who spoke to us even wore an umbrella on his lapel.
The presentation was OK– I’m not one for finance, and most of the presentation anyway was about how cool Primerica was and how we should all want to work there because we can help people get out of debt to invest the money they were spending on debt on investing in the other arms of the company. Then they talked about how they were needing people to sell life insurance and bring over mortages. After a while the new people would go train other people and receive kickbacks on how well the people they trained perfomed.
If Jay takes this job, he’ll essentially be an insurance salesman for the Umbrella Corp. in a rather pyrimid-esque set-up. At least that’s what I keep saying… on the otherhand if you’re good with people the money’s good (since it’s comission) and there is potential for an actual /career/.
We also saw Howl’s Moving Castle tonight. It was much, much better than Spirited Away. f you’ve already seen Spirited Away you’ll recognize several character archetypes in this one. Anyway, This movie was gorgeous and the plot was fun, although the end did leave me feeling a little unfulfilled. There’s just something that doesn’t sit right with me but I won’t mention it in the interest of spoiling it for anybody. :-)
