Cats and Collars
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006 @ 8:36pm. Category: General, Pets.I thought our cat outgrew her kitten-sized collar recently, so we picked up another, larger collar when we grocery shopped. Kaylee had been enjoying not wearing a collar, and was not pleased with the new one. Oh, she wore it, but she didn’t like it and made it clear.
Then she figured out that she could pop off the collar via the safety buckle. I think she figured this out by accident— we’d seen her around the house try to slip the collar over her head by frantically licking at it. A couple of times she got the collar into her mouth, where she would panic and paw at the collar until Jay or I removed it. Normally we’d just shorten the collar to prevent such hilarious cat stupidity, but this collar was as small as it would go. Since the other collar was “too small” we decided to keep using this one, and she’d get used to it eventually (or we’d buy another, slightly smaller collar when we were tired of watching the cat prance around trying to get the collar off). Besides, I had already written her name and a cellphone number on her collar since she abhors tags.
Just now Kaylee popped the collar off in probably ten seconds or less; Jay and I were conversing with Kaylee nearby and we heard a POP and clatter from the window. Kaylee eats lots of things she shouldn’t, so Jay raced over to the window to stop the cat. Kaylee had merely popped her collar off and looked quite proud. This was the third time she’d done it.
Jay procured the old collar from beside Kaylee’s waterdish (we let her have it to play with, and this is where she keeps it). Then we discovered I was not skilled in how sliding straps work, and Jay lengthened it (it was set at the smallest size). Kaylee is now wearing her beat-up old kitten collar, whining and moping around the house. This collar has a much stronger “saftey” catch, so she shouldn’t be able to pop it off.
